The general structure of a carboxylic acid. R represents any hydrocarbon chain.

Carboxylic acids are organic acids defined by a carboxyl group with the molecular formula -COOH. Salts and Anions of carboxylic acids are referred to as carboxylates. Carboxyl groups are present as one of the functional groups on amino acids along with an amine group - hence the name.
