Pholcodine is a mild opiate cough-supressent (anti-trussive) that has little or no opiate activity, but is able to inhibit the cough receptor reflex effectively. In high doses it causes drowsiness. It is commonly sold over the counter as Pholcodine-linctus, replacing the traditional cough medicine codeine-linctus due to its significantly higher potential for abuse. Despite its low abuse potential it is still strictly controlled in both the United States and the United Kingdom under their respective drug acts. Template:Compound-stub
